Prof. Norihisa Miki: Innovating Through Diversity

How to innovate in micro- and nanotechnology? What solutions are used in the design of an artificial kidney? Prof. Norihisa Miki from Keio University will discuss these topics during the Interdisciplinary Scientific Seminar at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

We invite you to the lecture “Innovating Through Diversity”, which the Japanese scientist will deliver on November 5th at the Congress Center of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Admission is free, but prior registration is required.

Date: November 5, 13.15 (CET)

Prof. Norihisa Miki is an expert in MEMS technology. His scientific interests focus on the design of biomedical devices based on microelectromechanical systems. He also works in the fields of medical engineering, neuroscience, and media arts.

He leads a laboratory in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Keio University, where innovative devices are being developed that integrate the human body with machines, taking into account not only all human senses but also virtual reality and cognitive sciences.

Prof. Norihisa Miki’s team works closely with the medical community to design devices, including transplantable artificial organs and advanced diagnostic systems. He is also involved in education on entrepreneurship, sharing his own experience in founding a healthcare startup. Additionally, he is the president of the university’s ice skating club (Keio Ice Skating Club).

Interdisciplinary Scientific Seminars is a series aimed at a wide audience—students, doctoral candidates, researchers, and anyone interested in expanding their knowledge. Wrocław University of Science and Technology regularly hosts experts from various fields who are eager to share the results of their research.

Listeners of the ISN have had the opportunity to hear from, among others, the 2023 Nobel Prize winner in physics—Prof. Ferenc Krausz, renowned architect and urban planner—Prof. Kees Christiaanse from ETH Zurich, world-famous cognitive science expert Prof. Peter Gärdenfors from Lund University, Prof. Szymon Malinowski—Chairman of the Climate Crisis Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as Finnish scientist from Aalto University—Prof. Tomi Kauppinen, Dr. Karolina Ćwiek-Rogalska from the Institute of Slavic Studies at the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the creator of the psychological theory of implementation intentions, Prof. Peter Gollwitzer from New York University.

Bio: Norihisa Miki received Ph.D. in mechano-informatics from University of Tokyo in 2001. He developed a world-smallest drone using MEMS technology during his Ph.D. Then, he worked at MIT microengine project as a posdoc (2001-2003), later as a research engineer (2003-2004). He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Keio University in 2004 as an assistant professor and became a full professor in 2017. His research interests started with development of MEMS-based biomedical and human interface devices. Currently, he also explores the fields of medical engineering, neuroscience, and media arts using his innovative devices. He was a division head of micro-nano science and technology division of Japanese Society for Mechanical Engineers in 2023. He is currently a department head and a chair of international affairs at the Faculty of Science and Technology. He has been dedicating himself to entrepreneurship education based on his own experience of founding a healthcare startup. He is a president of Keio Ice Skating Club.
