László Péter Kollár

Bio: László Péter Kollár is a distinguished civil engineer, academic leader, and current Secretary-General of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He also serves as Professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), where he previously held the role of Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation from 2015 to 2017. An internationally respected scholar, Professor Kollár was a Visiting Professor at Stanford University during the academic years 1992–1993 and 1997–1998. He was elected a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2007 and joined the Academia Europaea in 2012. Throughout his career, he has played a leading role in numerous scientific organizations and editorial boards, both in Hungary and internationally. Notably, he served as President of the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA)—a founding member of Science Europe—for five years, up to 2014.

Professor Kollár has received multiple prestigious honors for his contributions to science and research management. These include the Ipolyi Arnold Award (2008), the Széchenyi Prize (2015), and the József Nádor Memorial Medal (2021).

Since his election as Secretary-General in 2019, he has been instrumental in strengthening the Academy’s role in Hungary’s science funding landscape. His primary research interests include composite materials, earthquake engineering, and structural analysis.
