Title: “The Deep Learning Revolution in AI”

Abstract: Over the past 25 years, AI has moved from a fairly peripheral position in mainstream computer science research into the leading edge of a technological revolution. This change is, in no small measure, due to the emergence of radically new designs for the deep neural networks that are driving this revolution. In this talk, I will briefly discuss some of the main formal elements of these new models that provide much of their power. I will sketch the range of applications in which deep learning systems are transforming how we live and work. Finally, I will indicate some of the limitations and dangers of current AI systems. In order to formulate rational public policies for regulating AI, it is necessary to understand how these systems operate.

Bio: Shalom Lappin is Professor of Natural Language Processing in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queens Mary University of London, Emeritus Professor of Computational Linguistics in the Department of Informatics, King’s College London, and a scientific researcher in the Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability, University of Gothenburg. His main areas of research are the application of machine learning to NLP and the cognitive foundations of natural language. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and a Member of the Academia Europaea.
