Seasonal Greetings

Dear Members of Academia Europaea,

In the whirlwind of today's fast-paced and unpredictable world, where global challenges seem to multiply and evolve with unprecedented speed, the role of science stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. The turbulent times we find ourselves in demand a steadfast commitment to understanding, innovation, and evidence-based solutions. As we grapple with a confluence of crises – from public health emergencies to climate change, geopolitical tensions to technological disruptions – the importance of science has never been more apparent. In this era of complexity and uncertainty, the mission of Academia Europaea becomes even more vital. Dedicated to fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, Academia Europaea serves as a crucial platform where researchers from diverse disciplines unite to address the pressing issues of our time. As we navigate the challenges of the present, this mission underscores the imperative of collective efforts in advancing scientific understanding and promoting sustainable solutions for the benefit of all.

Academia Europaea Wrocław Knowledge Hub takes this mission exceptionally seriously. One of the most significant events of 2023 was our involvement in a project focused on providing scholarships to young scholars escaping the war-torn regions of Ukraine. This gesture of solidarity among the scientific community aimed to support the new generation of Ukrainian scholars seeking refuge in European countries during times of war, all while endeavoring to continue their research pursuits. In this small way, we have managed to contribute, albeit modestly, to the advancement of science and development against the destructive chaos of war.

In pursuit of the same goal, our Hub has initiated the "Anthropocene" conference. This event not only served as a platform for reflection on the broad aspects of humanity's relationship with the surrounding world but also aimed to enrich intellectual responses to the challenges arising from an increasingly unstable reality. This proved to be a noteworthy year as, despite delays caused by the pandemic, we successfully summarized and commemorated the 10th anniversary of the hub. The significance of this milestone was accentuated by the presence of numerous Academia Europaea members, including esteemed intellectuals such as Nobel laureate Prof. Erwin Neher. This exceptional event provided an opportunity for reflection on past achievements and the establishment of new goals. Furthermore, as a consistent tradition, annual highlights included festive gatherings that brought together local members of the Academia, offering a platform for introducing new members and fostering stronger bonds among intellectuals.

A remarkable conclusion to the year was the conferral of an honorary doctorate by the Wrocław University of Science and Technology to the President of Academia Europaea, Prof. Marja Makarow, in recognition of her outstanding scientific achievements and her close ties to Poland and Wrocław.

On this auspicious occasion, I extend my sincere wishes to all esteemed members of Academia Europaea for enduring success and steadfast perseverance in the noble pursuits of advancing knowledge, fostering intellectual exchange, and establishing the bedrock for an enhanced comprehension of the world amidst these challenging times.

Prof. Arkadiusz Wójs
