Title: “Heritage: questions vs answers”

Abstract: Heritage, in its aspects of materiality and immateriality, has always been, in implicit terms much more than explicit, the connective tissue of human activity. The transition from the unconscious use of Heritage by man for his socio-cultural growth to a conscious and reasoned use (not just good reasoning) has created- and continues to – problems of various nature and magnitude, the solution to which is difficult to find especially because of the very different role that Heritage has assumed today compared to yesterday. Observing what is happening now is more likely to raise questions than to provide answers. In the future, it is not only the debate among specialists that can help to improve the situation; at the very least, analysing the problem must lead to a political commitment, with few premises: creating a common language between Humanities and Hard Sciences; eliminating the presumption of univocal management of the heritage, if we care about the issue, i.e. our lives; restoring words to their semantic value and give concrete content to verbal operations.

Bio: Dr. Luisa Migliorati is Professor of Ancient Topography: UNITELMA – Rome Sapienza University (Master “Classical Archaeology”). Vice-President of CIPSH and member of the Board of UAI and WPU. Member of Academia Europaea. Corresponding Member of Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia and Istituto Nazionale di Studi Romani. Director of the Italian section of Tabula Imperii Romani-Forma Orbis Romani (patronage UAI and UAN). Teaching Member of Specialisation in Architectural Heritage Conservation at Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán – Arquitectura. Past professor at Rome Sapienza University (ancient Topography, Cartography and Urbanism 1979 – 2022). Field interests: Ancient Topography and Urbanism, Heritage buildings, Ancient architecture, Ancient cartography, Mexico Colonial urbanism.
