Erika Bálint

Bio: Erika Bálint is a president of the Women in Science Association chemical engineer working as an Associate Professor at the Department of Organic Chemistry and Technology, Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Budapest, Hungary. She obtained her diploma in Chemical Engineering in 2009, and received her PhD in 2013 at BME. In addition to her academic role, she serves as the President of the Women in Science Association, actively promoting gender equality and the advancement of women in scientific fields.

Her research focuses on the development of environmentally friendly processes for the synthesis of biologically active compounds and active pharmaceutical ingredients using microwave heating, continuous flow chemistry, 3D printed flow reactors and cyclodextrin chemistry. Her work was awarded, among others, by Women in Science Excellence Award (2019), Géza Zemplén Award (2019), Academic Youth Award (2022), Bolyai Memorial Plaques (2022) and Scientific Student Conference Commemorative Medal (2023).

She is one of the founding members of the Hungarian Young Academy (2021-2024), where she was also a board member for 2 years. In 2023 she was elected to the Steering Committee of the Hungarian Chemical Society, where she try to represent and support young Hungarian chemists. In May 2025, she was elected president of the Association of Hungarian Women in Science, where, in line with the association’s aims, she will focus on encouraging girls to take an interest in STEM subjects in primary and secondary schools.
