How can tiny gold structures help scientists see what happens inside living cells? Can nanotechnology become a breakthrough tool in the fight against cancer? These are some of the fascinating questions that will be explored during the upcoming Interdisciplinary Scientific Seminar hosted by the Academia Europaea Wrocław Knowledge Hub and Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
On 26 May, the Wrocław academic community will welcome Catherine Murphy — one of the world’s leading researchers in nanoscience and biophotonics. During her open lecture, “Biophotonic Applications of Gold Nanorods”, the distinguished scientist will present how gold nanostructures can revolutionise modern diagnostics and targeted cancer therapies.
The seminar offers a rare opportunity to discover one of today’s most dynamic interdisciplinary research fields, where physics, chemistry, materials science and medicine converge. Gold nanorods — microscopic structures thousands of times thinner than a human hair — possess unique optical properties that allow researchers to image cellular processes with extraordinary precision and potentially deliver therapies directly to diseased tissues

The lecture, titled “Biophotonic Applications of Gold Nanorods” will take place at the Congress Hall of Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Building D-20, 8 Janiszewskiego Street) at 13:15 CET. It is open to students, doctoral researchers, academics and all science enthusiasts interested in the future of biomedical innovation. BIO:
Catherine Murphy is the Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She received her PhD in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin and joined the California Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral fellow. She became professor at the University of South Carolina and then moved on to University of Illinois.
Catherine Murphy was ranked top 0.02% of most influential scientists in PLOS Biology study in 2021. She received multiple awards and honors, including from the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry. She is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Her research interests include the synthesis, properties and applications of colloidal inorganic nanomaterials, especially gold nanorods, and optical probes of DNA and protein nanoscale structure and dynamics.

The Interdisciplinary Scientific Seminar is a series aimed at a wide audience – students, doctoral candidates, researchers, and anyone interested in expanding their knowledge. Wrocław University of Science and Technology regularly hosts experts from various fields who are eager to share the results of their research.
