Title: Between Pan and Close-Up: Landscapes of Home Movies. A Case Study of the Bełżecki Family Archive
Abstract: The paper is thought of as a preliminary study to further research home movie archives in the context of vernacular representation of the landscape and identifying the Anthropocene in manifestations of visual culture. It will consist of three general parts. Firstly, I will explain the choice of home movies as the subject of a study aiming to trace the “Anthroposcape”. Then I will propose a case study of the Bełżecki Family archive from the Polish Home Movie Archives project. My analysis’s main focus would be examining the film form and style (shots, composition, timeframe, editing) in representing the landscape. I would like to consider in what ways and to what extent this particular vernacular filmmaking reflects in establishing a documentary view of the landscape close to humans. To achieve that I will refer to Tim Ingold’s anthropological understanding of the concept of landscape. In the conclusive part of the paper I would like to present more suggestions for transdisciplinary research paths, connecting the exploration of home movie archives with visual culture studies, natural sciences and literature.

Bio: Justyna Hanna Budzik, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Culture Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice. She is a film scholar and teacher of Polish as a foreign language. She has authored Filmowe cuda i sztuczki magiczne. Szkice z archeologii kina [Film marvels and magic tricks. Sketches on the archaeology of cinema] (2015) and Dotyk światła. O zmysłowym doznawaniu kina [A Touch of Light. On the sensual experience of cinema] (2012), and co-authored (with Agnieszka Tambor) Polska półka filmowa. Krótkometrażowe filmy aktorskie i animowane w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego [Polish Film Shelf. Short live-action and animated films in teaching Polish as a foreign language] (2018). She was a Polish language teacher at INALCO in Paris (2016/2017) and a winner of the Fulbright Slavic Award at the University of Washington in Seattle (2017/2018). Her professional and research interests involve media education and Polish language glottodidactics.
